Overview

Waterloo Convention Center is offering a paid internship. We are looking for students who want professional level experience and have the initiative, skills and drive to excel. This program will give college students an opportunity to work alongside professionals in the live entertainment, sports, and venue management industry. 

 

Position Summary: 

The Event Services Intern reports directly to the Event Manager. This position will have the opportunity to learn and get a hands-on look at the planning and execution of Waterloo Convention Center departments including Guest Services, Security, and Event Management for events including trade shows, community shows, sports events, weddings, etc.

  • Not to exceed 20 hours per week
  • Internship Dates: Spring Semester
  • Location: Waterloo Convention Center, Waterloo, IA

This role is expected to last from January 22, 2026 and will end on April 17, 2026.

 

This role pays an hourly rate of $13.00

 

This position will remain open until April 10, 2026.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties:

  • Assist with preparation of event materials throughout the planning and execution of major events such as Event Reports and Brief Sheets.
  • Learn and ensure all laws, codes, ordinances, polices, procedures, risk management, safety precaution, rules/regulations and emergency procedures are followed by working alongside the event managers
  • Shadow various departments during events including Security, Guest Services, and Event Services.
  • Attend Event Advance and Event Operation meetings.
  • Manage an event or portion of an event with the supervision of an Event Manager.
  • Resolve problems in a timely manner; analyze and gather information and identify alternative solutions quickly and effectively.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Event Manager.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Event Operations & execution: Support the planning and live execution of major events by preparing event reports and brief sheets, and participating in event advance and operations meetings to ensure operational readiness.
  • Cross-funtional coordination & issue resolution: Gained hands-on experience collaborating with Security, Guest Services, and Event Services to manage portions of events, quickly resolve issues, and support a safe, seamless guest experience.

Qualifications

The qualifications listed below represent the credentials necessary to perform the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Current student or recent graduate from a university program in venue management, event management, sport management or a related field.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present and communicate new ideas and concepts.
  • Previous experience coordinating events/programs preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs (Microsoft Word and Excel)
  • Ability to work well in a team-oriented, fast-paced, event-driven environment
  • Extremely organized and detail-oriented, quick learner and great time management skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills 
  • Work extended and/or irregular hours at the Waterloo Convention Center events including nights and weekends.

Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule inclusive of weekends, nights and holidays required.
