Overview

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Human Resources Manager to join our team in a leadership capacity. The ideal candidate is a proactive HR professional who will lead and oversee key HR functions including talent acquisition, employee relations, performance management, compliance, policy development, and payroll oversight. This role will be instrumental in fostering a positive workplace culture, ensuring compliance with Canadian labour laws and supporting organizational growth. This position will be the HR lead for OVG at Spruce Meadows, reporting into the General Manager with dotted line responsibility to the OVG Corporate People and Culture team.

 

The Human Resources Manager is responsible for providing support to managers and employees regarding HR policies and practices, researching and/or investigating concerns and making recommendations that promote positive employee relations. Main area of responsibility is to serve as a resource to management and employees in solving day-to-day workplace matters.

This includes conducting workplace investigations and recommending effective solutions and corrective actions in accordance with policy and applicable laws, as well as advising on performance management.

 

This role pays an annual salary of $70,000-$80,000 CAD

Responsibilities

  • Event Staffing & Recruiting: Lead high-volume, event-driven recruitment, onboarding, and orientation for part-time, seasonal, and event-day personnel.
  • Employee Relations & Compliance: Manage on-site employee relations, disciplinary actions, and ensure strict compliance with local/federal labor laws, health protocols, and safety regulations.
  • Onsite Presence & Engagement: Maintain a visible presence during event days to resolve staff issues immediately, boosting morale and engagement.
  • Training & Safety: Implement and monitor company and provincial safety training programs, ensuring all staff understand venue emergency procedures and service standards.
  • Performance Management: Oversee employee performance appraisals and provide counsel to supervisors to maximize productivity.
  • Conduct comprehensive event-day onboarding for new hires, emphasizing emergency protocols, customer service standards, and venue policy.
  • Coach and deliver leadership training modules for supervisors and frontline leads, focusing on conflict resolution, performance management, and HR policy compliance.
  • Counsel, guide, and educate managers for optimal performance and resolution of complex employee relations and performance management/discipline matters
  • Respond to and resolve employee complaints regarding policy violations, such as allegations of discrimination, harassment, and other work related issues originating from the employee hotline and other sources
  • Oversee the onboarding and orientation process to ensure a seamless transition for new employees and alignment with company culture and values
  • Scheduling and Roster Management: Support department management with tools for scheduling for 300+ employees, coordinate staffing for events and conducting adjustment as needed
  • Uniform Management: Support Department Managers with uniform distribution and compliance
  • Generate reports based on workforce data to support Management decisions and initiatives. Monitor HR KPIs, such as turnover rates and employee satisfaction.

Qualifications

  • Established working knowledge of all aspects of human resources, including but not limited to compensation, benefits, employee relations and labour relations, talent acquisition, leadership development, talent management, training and organizational development, change management, and organizational dynamics.
  • Proficiency in compliance, specifically Alberta provincial labour laws, and other regulations relevant to the business environment.
  • Familiarity with payroll compliance in Alberta
  • Should exhibit the ability and personal accountability to effectively network and navigate through organizational relationships and work in a matrixed environment.
  • Work independently to analyze data and provide management with constructive recommendations.
  • Has experience in public speaking and delivering presentations to different audiences.
  • Exercises the highest level of discretion and judgment in handling confidential and sensitive employee, compensation, legal, and organizational information.
  • 3-5+ years of experience in HR generalist or related experience.
  • Proficiency in ADP WorkforceNow and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources, Business Administration, or a related field preferred.
  • CHRP or CHRL designation (or in progress) is preferred.
