Overview

The Palm Springs Plaza Theatre is seeking a dynamic and experienced Assistant General Manager to support the daily operations of one of Southern California's most beloved performing arts venues. The ideal candidate is a passionate arts advocate with strong leadership skills, operational expertise, and a commitment to delivering exceptional experiences for artists, audiences, and staff alike. The Assistant General Manager works closely with the SVP and General Manager to ensure the smooth and efficient operation of the theater across all departments. This position requires flexibility, professionalism, and a genuine love for the performing arts and the unique community of Palm Springs.

 

This role pays an annual salary of $100,398-$130,500 and is bonus eligible.

Responsibilities

Operations Management 

  • Assist the SVP/General Manager in overseeing day-to-day operations of the Palm Springs Plaza Theatre
  • Supervise front-of-house, box office, facilities, and event staff
  • Ensure all departments are aligned and operating efficiently before, during, and after performances
  • Serve as Manager on Duty (MOD) for performances and special events
  • Develop and enforce venue policies, procedures, and safety protocols

Staff Leadership

  • Recruit, train, schedule, and evaluate operational staff
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and high-performing team culture reflective of Palm Springs' vibrant and diverse community
  • Conduct regular staff meetings and performance reviews
  • Manage volunteer programs in coordination with department heads

Financial Oversight

  • Assist Director of Finance in developing and monitoring departmental budgets
  • Review and approve operational expenditures within designated authority
  • Analyze revenue and expense reports and recommend adjustments
  • Support contract negotiations with vendors and service providers

Patron Experience

  • Champion a best-in-class audience experience from arrival to departure 
  • Resolve patron complaints and escalated customer service issues professionally
  • Oversee accessibility programs and ADA compliance initiatives
  • Collaborate with Director of Marketing to enhance audience engagement and retention within the Coachella Valley community and beyond to help drive attendance.

Facility & Safety Management

  • In coordination with the Operations Manager oversee routine maintenance, repairs, and cleanliness standards of our historic venue
  • Ensure compliance with all City of Palm Springs, state, and federal safety regulations
  • Manage emergency response plans and conduct regular safety trainings
  • Coordinate with security personnel during events
  • Work alongside preservation and facilities teams to maintain the integrity of the theatre's historic architecture

Community & Civic Engagement

  • Represent the Palm Springs Plaza Theatre at community events, civic meetings, and local business partnerships
  • Build and maintain relationships with the Palm Springs Plaza Theatre Foundation, Board of Directors, City of Palm Springs, neighborhood organizations, and downtown business associations.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Arts Administration, Business, Hospitality Management, or related field required
  • 3–5 years of progressive experience in venue management
  • Demonstrated supervisory and team leadership experience

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in budget management, financial reporting and forecasting
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (required) and venue management software (e.g., Prism, Ticketmaster, CRM systems)
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, high-energy environment
  • Ability to remain calm and decisive under pressure
  • Strong problem-solving and conflict resolution skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a nonprofit performing arts organization
  • Familiarity with ADA compliance and accessibility best practices
  • Experience working with or within a historic landmark venue
  • Knowledge of the Palm Springs and Coachella Valley arts and tourism landscape
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish strongly preferred

Work Schedule

  • Must have a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, in alignment with the theater's performance calendar.
  • Must be available to serve as Manager on Duty during performances and events as needed.
