Overview

The HVAC Engineer is responsible for the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and optimization of the facility's heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, and mechanical systems. This position plays a critical role in maintaining a safe, comfortable, and efficient environment for guests, employees, performers, and clients during both event and non-event operations. Working under the direction of the Assistant General Manager, the HVAC Engineer performs preventive maintenance, responds to equipment issues, monitors building automation systems, and assists in maintaining the overall mechanical infrastructure of the facility. This role also supports venue operations by ensuring critical systems remain reliable while contributing to the overall success of events through teamwork and operational excellence.

 

This role pays an hourly rate of $28.00 - $33.00.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, troubleshooting, and repairs on HVAC, refrigeration, plumbing, and mechanical systems throughout the facility.
  • Maintain and repair equipment, including, but not limited to, chillers, boilers, air handling units, pumps, cooling towers, ice plant systems, exhaust and ventilation systems, variable frequency drives (VFDs), and building automation/control systems.
  • Monitor facility mechanical systems and respond promptly to equipment alarms or operational issues.
  • Operate building automation and energy management systems to maximize system performance and efficiency.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, equipment manuals, schematics, and specifications.
  • Diagnose equipment failures using appropriate testing equipment and implement effective repairs.
  • Perform routine plumbing repairs, including fixtures, valves, piping, and related mechanical components.
  • Assist with ice plant operations, Zamboni maintenance, and ice maintenance activities when applicable.
  • Maintain accurate preventive maintenance schedules, work orders, and repair documentation within the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Operate equipment, including forklifts, aerial lifts, scissor lifts, Zambonis, hand tools, power tools, and other maintenance equipment, in a safe manner.
  • Assist with event conversions, facility changeovers, and operational support as needed.
  • Maintain compliance with OSHA regulations, company safety policies, and applicable building, mechanical, and fire codes.
  • Identify opportunities to improve equipment reliability, reduce downtime, and enhance energy efficiency.
  • Respond to emergency maintenance situations during events and non-event operations.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe mechanical rooms, workspaces, and storage areas.
  • Collaborate effectively with Engineering, Operations, Housekeeping, Security, Event Services, and other departments to support successful venue operations.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Technical school diploma, trade certification, or associate degree in HVAC, Industrial Maintenance, Mechanical Systems, or a related field preferred.
  • EPA Universal Refrigerant Certification preferred or ability to obtain within a specified timeframe.
  • 3+ years of experience maintaining commercial HVAC and mechanical systems, preferably in a large public assembly venue, arena, convention center, stadium, hotel, hospital, or similar facility.
  • Experience troubleshooting commercial HVAC equipment, refrigeration systems, boilers, chillers, pumps, and air handling units.
  • Experience working with Building Automation Systems (BAS) or Energy Management Systems preferred.
  • Experience using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) is preferred.
  • Experience operating forklifts, aerial lifts, and other maintenance equipment preferred.
  • Experience supporting ice plant operations and Zamboni maintenance is preferred.
  • Must have a commitment to workplace safety and safe equipment operation.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in emergency and high-pressure situations.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong working knowledge of commercial HVAC, refrigeration, plumbing, and mechanical systems.
  • Knowledge of applicable mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and building codes.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, schematics, and technical manuals.
  • Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple maintenance requests while responding effectively to changing operational needs.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and commitment to preventive maintenance.
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively as part of a team.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills when interacting with employees, contractors, clients, and guests.
